Oak Creek Canyon meanders for 13 miles between Flagstaff and Sedona. Situated in the Cocino National Forest, Oak Creek Canyon is a river gorge featuring stunning rock formations among abundant trees and other vegetation. Creeks, rivers and ponds dot the landscape, making it one of the best fishing spots in the state. Those who like to camp will appreciate the numerous campgrounds this area has to offer. The area is particularly beautiful during the autumn when leaves are changing color, although it's a beautiful drive any time of year.
Cave Creek
Cave Creek is a small, scenic community in the Sonoran Desert east of Arizona’s largest city, Phoenix. Surrounded by stunning desert vistas, this town features a charming Old-West flavor and spectacular weather most of the year. Many local businesses are situated in buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. It makes a good day trip but also has comfortable hotels for those desiring to stay longer.
The Petrified Forest National Park
Perhaps it's relatively proximity to the Grand Canyon makes this National Park easy to overlook, but this area doesn't get nearly the traffic its spectacular scenery warrants. Those who value solitude in the wilderness find abundant opportunities for back country hikes here, but the area is also ideally suited for casual family picnics. Guided programs and cultural demonstrations are available as well.
