Glazed HamWhat’s for dinner tonight? Same old same old? If you’re tired of beef and chicken, discover what you can do with a ham. Sure, you can just throw it in the oven and bake it, but with the right glaze it will amaze you with its tastiness. It’s an outstanding choice for tonight’s meal, and it might change your attitude toward leftovers.

No need to wait for a special occasion. Any time you like, treat yourself to several days of good eating with this glazed ham recipe.

The Best Glazed Ham

You’ll need a pre-cooked half ham of about six pounds. Heat the oven to 325˚F. You can bake it right on a foil-lined pan but an oven rack is better. Put the fat side up and score it 3/4 inch deep in a diamond pattern. Bake 8 to 20 minutes a pound, around two hours.

Now put together the glaze. In a saucepan, mix together ½ cup each of apple juice, brown sugar, and maple syrup with a heaping tablespoon of Dijon mustard. Optionally, add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or allspice. Cook at medium high until it boils, and boil for two minutes. Don’t let it boil over.

20 minutes before the ham is baked, spoon on half the glaze. Watch it seep into the cuts. Ten minutes later, add the rest.

When the ham reaches 140 degrees, it’s done. Pull it out and let it rest under loose foil for 10-15 minutes.

Carve it and eat it. The crust is delicious and the flavor seeps all the way through. Save leftovers for a quick and easy meal later in the week.

If you’re looking for a new apartment for those delectable dinners, look no further than Woodland Village. Contact us to learn more about our comfortable Flagstaff apartments today!

Easy MealWhen it comes to watching your favorite food programs or looking up recipes online, sometimes it can feel as though the creators are a little presumptuous about what's in your pantry. While we all know we're supposed to have certain items squirreled away, it's not unusual to open the doors and find one lone can of diced tomatoes that expired a year ago. We don't want to be presumptuous either, but hopefully you can make at least one of our suggestions.

1. Pantry Pasta

At its heart, this dish is just parmesan, olive oil, butter, garlic, and red pepper. What's especially useful about it is that you can really mix it up if you don't have all the ingredients. The pasta water does wonders for blending in the oil and butter into a silky sauce

2. Spinach Tortellini Tomato Soup

While this one is slightly more complicated, it's also a good way to use up an older can of tomato soup. Packaged tortellini, chicken broth, spinach, and garlic really jazz this dish up, and it's equally good for leftovers as it is the day it's made (a feat that few dishes can really measure up to).

3. Jalapeño Parmesan-Crusted Grilled Cheese

Sometimes you just need a little pucker to add to a basic dish to get a meal that you won't regret. Grilled cheese is definitely one of those items that you can make even when you're bone-tired, and the extra flavor might just be enough to add to your regular rotation. Plus, it's just five ingredients (including the butter).

Our apartments in Flagstaff don't just smell better when you're making home-made meals, they simply are better. Taking the time to prepare food—whether you enjoy the process or not—means you'll appreciate the meal more. If you're looking for a place that appreciates you, call Woodlands Village today to learn more about our availability.

Spring VegetablesWith the arrival of spring, everything gets a bit more colorful. Plants and flowers bloom in a kaleidoscope of colors, the sky seems to be more blue than usual, and even our plates brighten up a bit. Shades of green overwhelmingly replace the dark oranges and purples of fall and winter vegetables, and dishes are crisper and lighter, too.

Our Flagstaff apartments offer residents the opportunity to experiment in the kitchen with spring's brightly-colored veggies. Here are some fresh ways to incorporate three of the season's most popular vegetables into your spring meals.

Asparagus

Easy to find and delicious no matter how it's prepared, asparagus is versatile and incredibly good for you. It's low in calories but nutrient-dense, so you get a lot of bang for your nutritional buck. This recipe is super simple, but presents the asparagus in a less-than-typical way, giving it a modern twist.

Sugar snap peas

They may not be at the top of your snack foods list, but snap peas are light, tasty, and easy to prepare, making them a perfect go-to for when hunger strikes. As a bonus, sugar snap pea plants can be grown indoors. This fresh take on a salad is packed with fiber and takes less than five minutes to prepare, and the addition of mint in this recipe elevates an otherwise-average dish.

Green beans

Typically just served with butter, there's a lot more to green beans than meets the eye. They're an excellent source of nutrients and can be prepared (quickly!) in any number of ways. Try this sweet-and-sour version or even pickle them for a refreshing, healthy snack.

With so many tasty spring vegetables to choose from, it might be difficult deciding on how to cook them! At our apartments in Flagstaff, AZ, community members enjoy open floor plans and spacious kitchens. Give us a call or contact us today to see our available floor plans!

ParsnipsSome veggies get way more attention than others at our Flagstaff, AZ apartment community, but parsnips always seem to be left out in the cold. Despite the fact that they're very much in season right now, many people overlook these root vegetables in favor of their carrot cousins. But fear not, dear reader. If you're looking for a way to switch up your entree options, we've got a few parsnip selections you should consider trying.

1. Appetizer: Parsnip “Pigs” in a Blanket With Chimichurri

Leave the meat for another day because parsnips are a great replacement for sausage or hot dogs. Frozen puff pastry is always happy to wrap itself around parsnips, providing a cozy, comfortable holding spot for this lesser-known veggie.

2. Soup: Carrot-Parsnip Soup With Parsnip Chips

People make soup out of potatoes and carrots all the time, so why shouldn't parsnips get a chance to shine? With this recipe, carrots, parsnips, and onions come together in perfect harmony. The key comes in roasting the parsnips and carrots before they find their way into the blender to be pureed.

3. Entree: Skillet Roast Chicken With Fennel, Parsnips, and Scallions

Okay, maybe the parsnips are just the side dish in this delicious kitchen creation, but that doesn't mean their supporting role isn't just as important as the poultry they're adorning. The best part of this recipe? You can absolutely cheat and pick up a rotisserie chicken on your way home from work and still enjoy fresh-roasted parsnips and scallions when you're ready to sit down for dinner.

4. Dessert: Parsnip Spice Cake With Ginger Cream Cheese Frosting

Sometimes, carrots need to step off their pedestal and give other root veggies a chance to be the star. That's exactly what happens when parsnips marry a bit of cream cheese frosting.

We're currently accepting applications for new residents at our Woodlands Village Apartment Homes, and we'd love to have you. Stop by, so we can show you around!

Grilled VegetablesAutumn temperatures are still high in Arizona, which means it’s still possible to log some cooking time on the grill! Our beautiful apartments in Flagstaff offer our community a gas grill that can be used once it is reserved through the front desk. We’ve compiled a list of delicious recipes using in-season fruits and vegetables.

Autumn Seasonal Fruits & Vegetables

Arizona boasts a wide range of fruits and vegetables that are in season during autumn, including:

  • Arugula

  • Basil

  • Beets

  • Bok Choy

  • Broccoli

  • Carrots

  • Dates

  • Green Onions

  • Lettuce

  • Pumpkins

  • Squash

  • Tomatoes

  • Turnips

The above list can be used to create incredibly delicious sides that accompany a range of meats and seafood.

Beef With Sides Recipes

This simple recipe combines beef filets with tomatoes, onions, and romaine to create a simple yet tasty autumn dish. Everything is prepared on the grill, so you can gather what you need in your kitchen before heading down. Bring dishes and utensils so you can enjoy your meal hot off the grill. Top the dish with basil to add a hint of freshness to the juicy steak and tomatoes.

Poultry With Side Dishes

For those who enjoy Asian flavors, this grilled bok choy recipe is a perfect way to retain the crispy nature of the vegetable. Combine it with sesame grilled chicken and jasmine rice for a complete dish. Don't forget the sodium sauce!

Seafood and Salad

Create a tasty, exciting salad with grilled shrimp along with grilled beets and carrots. Combine the grilled items over your favorite salad base and top with lemon juice. If you want additional elements in the salad, add tomatoes, onion, and goat cheese to the mix.

Buffet TableSetting up a buffet lets you save space and encourages guests to socialize in our Flagstaff apartments. You can also set up a game station to keep everyone engaged. Here are some tips on how to make the meal a success.

Set Up

A folding table can be moved and stored easily and is easy to dress up with a nice tablecloth. Position items strategically, so people don't have to return for forgotten items. For example, place extra napkins, cutlery, and salt and pepper shakers on both ends of the table and set up a couple of bread baskets. Keeping decorations to a minimum saves space for essential items, so consider wall hangings and cute napkins that add color and flair.

If you have a Keurig machine, set up a coffee station away from the main buffet area. You can include canned and bottled beverages to minimize cleanup or ask everyone to reuse their glasses. Ideally, you could set this up in the kitchen since there are bound to be some spills.

What to Serve

  • Fruits and raw vegetables are easy to prepare and eat, making them perfect buffet food. Place unsliced peaches or apples in a bowl for a colorful, no-fuss dish. You can buy veggie trays that come in a ready-to-serve container for another instant offering.
  • Bread is a buffet staple. Precut flavorful loaves from the bakery or serve hot croissants with butter, jam, and other yummy spreads. For board game parties or movie nights, lay out the fixings for sandwiches that guests can construct quickly before getting back to the fun. If it's a sports gathering, hang up team pennants and paraphernalia to set the mood.
  • Salads hold up well on buffets, and you can include different versions such as Caesar's and tossed greens.
  • Baked ziti, lasagna, and other baked pasta plates are big hits and hold up well if there are leftovers.
  • Serving chilled or smoked meats take off some of the pressure of trying to keep food hot.
  • Cooked carrots, green beans, baskets of baked potatoes, and grilled asparagus are easy to keep warm in a chafing dish or with a can of Sterno to supply the heat.
  • Consider a dessert bar where your family and friends can frost and decorate their own cupcakes. Add some pies and a cake for finicky guests who aren't interested in designing their own sweets.

Buffets are convenient for guests and help you maximize space in our apartments in Flagstaff. If you'd like to learn about our open floor plans, give us a call today!

Spring is finally here! If you are hosting a get-together with family or friends in the coming months, you may be looking for easy, festive appetizers to serve. Here are a few easy spring appetizers you can serve at the next event you are hosting.

Easy Spring Appetizers to Serve at Your Next Party

Roll-Ups

In spring, you want items that are light and comforting. Roll-ups are simple to make, easy to customize, filling and light, all at the same time. Grab a tortilla and add your favorite ingredients, such as avocado, hummus, turkey, ham, cheese and/or tomatoes. Roll the tortilla up and slice it up. If needed, grab a toothpick to hold it all together. Mix and match different ingredients to create a yummy snack for your guests.

Mini Caprese Bites

Caprese is a popular and yummy appetizer. It is perfect for spring and summer, as it is light and refreshing. To create a twist on this classic appetizer, use baby tomatoes and tiny mozzarella cubes. Cut a baby tomato in half. Place the top on a toothpick, followed by a mozzarella cube, followed by the bottom of the tomato. Drizzle with a mixture of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt to complete the appetizer.

Deviled Eggs

Deviled eggs are a springtime staple. You can stick to making these delicious treats in a traditional manner, or look online to find recipes that kick things up a notch. There are recipes that include throwing in peppers and jalapenos for a spicy kick to a traditional favorite, or recipes that include adding chicken or crab to up your protein intake.

Do you love to entertain but don't love the space you currently entertain in? Finding a new place to live may be in order. If you are looking for apartments for rent in Flagstaff, Arizona, be sure to check out Woodlands Village Apartment Homes. We offer beautiful apartments that you will be proud to host your next event in. Contact us today to inquire about pricing and availability.

Rushing home to cook a meal is usually the last thing you want to do after a busy day. Since you can't get takeout every night, try these easy dinners that you can make in advance to save you time. These three recipes actually taste better a day or two after cooking!

Three Make-Ahead Dinners

Beef Stew

Beef stew begs to be made ahead. You can use your favorite recipe or try this easy one. Lightly coat one pound of 1/2 cubes of steak in flour. Saute until brown in a heavy-bottom pot. Remove meat, saute one diced onion and a tablespoon of minced garlic. Return meat to pot and add enough beef stock to cover, and cook covered over medium-low heat until tender. Add two cubed potatoes and two carrots. Cook until done. Store in the fridge, reheat and season to taste.

Chickpea Salad

This vegetarian salad is hearty enough for a light dinner. Rinse two 15-ounce cans of chickpeas and dump in a bowl. Peel and remove the seeds of a large cucumber. Dice the cucumber and add to the chickpeas. Open a jar of sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil and add to the bowl. Stir and store in the fridge. Before serving, add the juice of one-half of a lemon and season to taste.

Cold Fried Chicken

Believe it or not, cold fried chicken is actually delicious! Use your family recipe or try this one. Combine a pint of buttermilk, two tablespoons of Kosher salt and a teaspoon of fresh pepper. Soak three pounds of mixed chicken parts in the fridge for two or three hours, Meanwhile combine 1 cup of self-rising flour, a teaspoon each of paprika and garlic powder. Dredge chicken in flour mixture and fry in 350-degree oil for around 15 minutes until cooked through. Let cool on a wire rack and refrigerate.

quick breakfast

When you’re living life in the fast lane and you don’t have time to sit down and eat a full continental breakfast with orange juice, oatmeal, sausage and over-easy eggs every morning, don’t fear! We’ve got four easy on-the-go breakfast ideas that will suit you just fine!

1. Power Balls

These little bundles of energy will keep you going all morning long. Simply mix together the following in a large bowl and form into balls on wax paper. When firm, put them into a sealable container, and have at ‘em whenever you’re on the go in the morning!

Here’s the recipe:

– 1 cup old-fashioned oats

– 1/2 cup ground flax seeds

– 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

– 1/4 cup honey

– 1/3 cup natural peanut butter

– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2. Fruit (in Its Own Container!)

Here’s an easy one: Just grab a piece of fruit that has its own “container.” That would be oranges, bananas, and apples most of all. These can easily be thrown into your work bag and eaten on-the-go. Healthy and delicious.

3. Trail Mix

Trail mix is easy to carry (because it’s so small!), nutritious, simple to make and delicious. Mix some up at home using your own dark chocolate chips, almonds, cashews, raisins, and dried fruit. Alternatively, buy a premade package at the store. They’re just as good.

4. Egg and Bacon English Muffin

Lastly, make your own breakfast sandwich using a toasted whole wheat English muffin, a sliced hard boiled egg (that you made the night before), a slice of cheese, and some microwavable bacon. This one’s slightly more time intensive, but it’s still an easy and nutritious option.

Having a great kitchen in your apartment can make all the difference when it comes to how often you cook and thusly, how nutritious your diet is. Are you looking for a place with a better kitchen in Flagstaff, Arizona? Contact us today to see which of our Flagstaff Apartments are still available.

homemade pizza recipes

Few things are more welcome at the end of a long day at school or work is the sight of good pizza on your kitchen or dining room table. Fortunately, residents of apartments in Flagstaff don't have to be master chefs in order to craft a tasty pizza in their home kitchen. Following are just three basics of putting together a great pizza on your own or with help from your family, neighbors, or friends.

Homemade Pizza Crust

If you've got flour, whole wheat flour, active dry yeast, and olive oil in your cupboard, you've got the ingredients for crafting homemade pizza crust. Making several pizza crusts in advance, placing them between pieces of waxed paper, and keeping them in the freezer until you need them is an excellent way to conjure up a pizza in your kitchen in less than half an hour.

Grilled Pizza

Grilled ingredients such as Italian sausage, fresh mushrooms, onions, and sweet peppers combine to make great pizza toppings—this works best when using an outdoor grill. Simply place ingredients in a saucepan until the sausage is brown, pat down with paper towels to remove excess fat, and place two pizza dough circles on the grill. Carefully grill them on a lightly oiled rack and brush with olive oil when you turn them over.

When pizza crusts are browned, brush them with pizza sauce, sprinkled them with your choice of cheese, top with the sausage mixture, and grill until the crust is crispy and the cheese is melted.

Flatbread Pizza

Flatbread pizza is the busy person's savior—simply brush flatbread with pizza sauce, add your choice of ingredients such as sliced meats, roasted vegetables, and grated cheese. Place it under the broiler until cheese is melted and the flatbread is brown and crispy.

Please don't hesitate to contact our office at your convenience for more helpful hints on getting the most from life in your Flagstaff apartment.
